Several tech giants have appealed for a 9 month to one-year extension of the import license deadline for laptops, tablets and all-in-one PCs.

Import Licensing: The industry has welcomed the decision to defer the deadline to November 1 to implement the restrictions on imports of laptops, tablets, all-in-one-personal computers, ultra-small factor computers and servers. But it wants urgent clarity on the operational modalities at the earliest to be able to transition to the new regime.

Officials said FTA provisions won’t be violated as such non-tariff barriers are not negotiated in FTAs and India has cited security reasons for the latest measure. The country has not raised tariffs or imposed a ban but only said imports will require licences.

The recently unveiled import restrictions on laptops, tablets, all-in-one-personal computers, ultra-small factor computers and servers will also apply to shipments from countries and blocs with which India has free trade agreements (FTAs) such as Japan, South Korea and Asean.

The Indian government on Thursday restricted the import of laptops, PCs tablets, and other consumer-electronic devices. The move is believed to be aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and targets China, the origin of 75% of India’s imports of such devices, worth $5.33 billion in 2022-23, as frosty diplomatic ties persist between the two Asian economic powerhouses, a report by RT said.
