To save the lives of migrating salamanders, one Michigan city has closed a road.

Migrating amphibians were being hit by cars while crossing the road in egg-laying season. Eli Bieri persuaded officials to block a park road for safe salamander passage, The Washington Post reports.

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) — An Upper Peninsula city is closing a portion of a road to vehicular traffic every night to protect migrating salamanders. The city of Marquette is closing a portion of Peter White Drive in Presque Isle Park from 8 p.m.

Closures will be up until at least April 15 for migrating salamanders.
