Longtime pilot Elliott George Charles Leadlay, of Merritt Island, was killed in the crash, which occurred Saturday afternoon near Attalla. Area residents called after hearing the sound of an airplane engine followed by a loud bang or boom, sheriff’s officials said. Leadlay was the only person aboard, and officials say he was flying home after visiting a friend in Kentucky.

Facebook Share A man was killed today when a small plane he was flying from Kentucky to Florida crashed in Alabama, the authorities said. Elliott George Charles Leadlay, of Merritt Island, Florida, was found dead at the scene of the crash in Etowah County on Saturday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. Leadlay was 74. Deputies said they first learned of the crash when someone called 911 just before 1 p.m. to report hearing what sounded like a plane crash in the Sand Valley area. About 13 minutes later a second caller reported finding the crash site in a field behind a home on the 200 block of Kelley Lane off Sand Valley Road on the west side of the county, according to a press release from Tammy Bean, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.
