Juneteenth is the oldest known U.S. celebration of the end of slavery and commemorates June 19, 1865, the day that slaves were emancipated in Texas. The theme this year is Freedom and Justice, acknowledging the social injustice and inequality that led to a global reckoning with race and demands of better treatment of historically marginalized groups. The virtual events will highlight and celebrate the rich history of African-Americans in the U.S., including local businesses such as the Turkey Leg Hut, Houston Sauce Co., Crumbville, and the Emancipation Economic Development Council.
