Sugarpine Was Already One of Portland's Essential Summer Visits. Now It's Added a Hawaiian Food Cart.

Sugarpine Was Already One of Portland’s Essential Summer Visits. Now It’s Added a Hawaiian Food Cart. Take your food to an oversized picnic table above the Sandy River and, boom, a perfect afternoon. IMAGE: Tim Saputo. Updated 6:25 AM Way back in the day, like in the 1920s, taking a drive on the Columbia River Highway was the thing to do. And any good drive ended with a nice dinner at a “roadhouse.” The Multnomah Hazelwood drive-in served ice cream from the Hazelwood Cream Co. at a spot near Multnomah Falls. The Chanticleer Inn made a creamed chicken dinner to die for, until it burned down in 1930.

The Owners of Sugarpine Drive-In Have Purchased the Former Shirley's Tippy Canoe Property

Updated April 20 at 9:56 PM More than a year after beloved restaurant Shirley’s Tippy Canoe was ravaged by fire, the Troutdale property—which over the decades had become a Gorge landmark in its own right—will be revived after all. The husband-and-wife team who opened Sugarpine Drive-In in 2018 on the banks of the Sandy River about 2 miles to the north closed on the 1.5-acre site earlier this month, as first reported by The Oregonian. Emily Cafazzo and Ryan Domingo plan to bring the restaurant back to its 1930s roadhouse roots following a ground-up rebuild that will include indoor and outdoor seating. Rehabilitating the business is part of the couple’s overall goal to reestablish the Historic Columbia River Highway as a culinary destination.

Sugarpine Drive-In will take over old Tippy Canoe space with new roadhouse

Sugarpine Drive-In will take over old Tippy Canoe space with new roadhouse Updated 3:05 PM; Today 1:55 PM At the original Sugarpine Drive-In, business is up 120% compared to 2019. The restaurant is set to expand over the next two years, first with a new Hawaiian food truck, Da Pine Grinds, then by taking over the former Tippy Canoe property with a new roadhouse in 2022.Anna Spoerre Facebook Share If you’re the type of person more interested in your next good meal than your next scenic vista, a drive along the Historic Columbia River Highway is sure to bring up plenty of pangs, both from nostalgia and hunger. Before Interstate 84 cut a straighter line to Hood River, the old highway took a more subtle route, winding up and around the river cliffs, passing dozens of roadhouses offering fried chicken dinners, homemade ice cream and comfy rooms to weary travelers.
