Middletown COVID vaccination site transitions from federal to state-led
Daily News staff
After administering more than 40,000 vaccines at the Middletown Community Vaccination Center, the Federal staff supporting at the center has transitioned to a state-led team beginning May 14.
Since the center opened on March 10, it has been supported by 66 personnel from 15 federal agencies. The staff worked alongside 25 FEMA locally hired non-clinical staff in administering vaccines to communities hard hit by the pandemic. During the operation’s peak, the staff were administering nearly 1,700 vaccines in a single day.
The vaccination effort is not over. This transition of staff will ensure Rhode Island has available resources to support vaccination plans. FEMA is still supporting the Vaccination Center at the Providence Dunkin Donuts Convention Center, where most of the 25 FEMA local hires will soon transition to continue serving the residents of Rhode Island.
The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees more than 20 agencies, including ICE, Secret Service, and FEMA, previously said that ICE will not carry out any immigration enforcement activity near vaccine sites, including the clinics that FEMA has set up under President Bidenâs administration.David Goldman/Associated Press
PROVIDENCEâ When Rhode Island asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency for help building out the stateâs vaccination efforts on Feb. 23, numerous federal agencies, not just FEMA, deployed workers to the Ocean State.
Two months later, personnel from at least 16 different federal agencies have helped administer vaccines and fulfill support staff roles at the stateâs two mass vaccination sites supported by FEMA: the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence and the former Bennyâs store at 1400 West Main Road in Middletown.
