ORONO University of Maine Cooperative Extension and University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension will offer a webinar for home gardeners about managing weeds in existing perennial and ornamental plantings from 6–7:15 p.m. April 28.
“Weed Management for the Perennial and Ornamental Landscape” will focus on the most common weeds in Maine and New Hampshire gardens and detail effective control strategies for each. UNH Extension landscape and greenhouse horticulture field specialist Emma Erler will lead the workshop.
Registration is required; a sliding scale program fee is optional. Register on the event webpage to attend live or receive a link to the recording. This is the second in a six-part spring gardening webinar series offered every other Wednesday through June for Maine and New Hampshire gardeners. The winter months are often viewed as dreary and bleak and aren’t generally pictured as a great time for gardening. Although New England’s cold weather during this part of the year makes it difficult to engage in agricultural hobbies, it’s still possible to enjoy them in indoor settings.
On Wednesday, Jan. 28, the University of Maine and University of New Hampshire (UNH) Cooperative Extension programs hosted a webinar on optimizing plant growth with indoor lighting. The lecture portion of the webinar focused primarily on the science behind growing plants. Emma Erler and Jonathan Ebba, two local experts in horticulture, hosted this webinar. Ebba spoke for about 40 minutes on the use of lighting to help grow plants in an indoor setting. Ebba is a field specialist with the UNH extension program, and has a keen interest in commercial horticulture. He also has a background in teaching greenhouse management and crop production, and has managed ornamental and hy

University of Maine Cooperative Extension and University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension will offer a webinar for home gardeners about the principles of pruning from 6–7 p.m. Feb. 10.
“The Science of Pruning” will focus on proper pruning cuts for perennials based on factors including plant growth rate, flowering season and height. UNH Extension Education Center program coordinator Emma Erler will lead the workshop.
