The Best Cinematography of 2020 December 22, 2020 “A cinematographer is a visual psychiatrist–moving an audience through a movie […] making them think the way you want them to think, painting pictures in the dark,” said the late, great Gordon Willis. As we continue our year-end coverage, one aspect we must highlight is, indeed, cinematography. From talented newcomers to seasoned professionals, we’ve rounded up the examples that have most impressed us this year. Check out our rundown b...

Steve McQueen’s “Small Axe,” an anthology of five films centered on the lives of Black people in Britain, won best picture from the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. on Sunday. It’s the first time the top prize has gone to a series, rather than an individual movie, and the selection spurred social media debate about the definition of film versus television (“Small Axe” is a joint production of the BBC and Amazon). If anything, it’s a sign of what a peculiar year 2020 has been. Some m...

CinemaBlend Charlie Kaufmans latest film, Im Thinking of Ending Things, is the first direct-to-streaming feature from the Oscar-winning director and screenwriter. Release Date: 2005 Director: Terrence Malick Terrence Malick‘s  The New World is a cinematic wonder; a film that lives, and breathes, and fully transports you into the landscape. Every leaf on every tree, every ripple in every body of water, every bit of muck and grime, every boat that rocks upon unsteady seas – all of it combines to paint a picture that takes your breath away. Malick takes a ton of liberties with the true story of Pocahontas (played here by  Q’orianka Kilcher). Histo...

Chad Collins’s Top 10 Horror Movies of 2020 By Chad Collins My Top 10 horror movies of 2020 are a bit eclectic, maybe a little bit like the year itself. Had you asked me what I would have likely had here when the year started, I might have said something like Candymanor Halloween Kills. Naturally, as we all know, that is no longer the case. In a strange, roundabout kind of way, though, the delay of a few genre behemoths opened...

Saint Maud. Design: Empire Design, AV Squad With the pressure to keep making noise about a film in the extreme ephemerality of the web, some campaigns seem to throw out multiple design directions willy-nilly, often selling a muddled vision of the film. Despite taking different visual approaches to Rose Glass’ horror, this magnificent trifecta of posters for Saint Maud from Empire Design and AV Squad maintains connective tissue through type and colour, nailing the mood to create a consistent i...

There were a lot less movies thanks to theaters being closed, I couldnt keep up with the amount of TV there was and mostly rewatched old comfort shows, and concerts pretty much shut down entirely and theres no clear way to know when exactly theyll be back. So instead of doing m...

After  The Old Guard and  Extraction, it looks like Netflix has found a formula for their action titles: some sort of outsider gets mixed up with someone who is seemingly indestructible and there are lots of quick cuts to make all the fighting and explosions kind of confusing. The latest entry is   Mikael Håfström that finds Outside the Wire Trailer  The Old Guard or  Extraction, but they were both big hits for Netflix, so it makes sense that they’re ready to pump out even more action...
