And that was not just a historical footnote and this is not just a breakthrough, but it was something that defined in the public mind something that he had to grapple with. And i try to make an argument in the book that it wasnt just something that happened to him, but this is something he helped shape the something he helped to create a narrative of race in america that helped bring america forward.
