The gunman stopped at a historically Black college, but was chased off by security, likely thwarting an attack on the school. He later killed 3 at a Dollar General.

The gunman was in the parking lot at Edward Waters University before the shooting occurred at a Dollar General store. The incident sparked new fears about safety for African Americans at colleges.

The shootings dredged up memories of another infamous racist attack in the city nearly 60 years ago known as "Ax Handle Saturday."
