Police deny arrest of Wine, say they escorted him from airport to his home, opposition claims politician is under house arrest

The leader of Ugandas main opposition party, Bobi Wine, was arrested on Thursday on his return to the country, his partys secretary general announced.

The police denied that they had arrested Bobi Wine, a challenger to Uganda’s autocratic president, saying they “escorted” him from an airport to his home.

Currently, there are no direct flights between India and Uganda and this gap is filled largely by the Gulf carriers such as Air Arabia, Oman Air and Emirates as well as other African airlines like Ethiopian Air and Kenya Airways with one or multi stop flights to and fro.

The Prime Minister said he hoped the measures would not cause unnecessary delays but stressed that no risks could be taken with passenger safety.

Wine was whisked away by plainclothes officers at Entebbe Airport but police denied arresting him.
