QUINCY City councilors are enthusiastic about a plan to bring citywide internet to Quincy, which proponents say would improve reliability of service, introduce competition to the market and ultimately drive down prices.
Ward 3 Councilor Ian Cain first floated the idea to councilors in mid-2018, and brought consulting company EntryPoint Networks to present a proposal to city council last November. On Monday, councilors heard once again from the company s CEO, Jeff Christiansen, who said an overwhelming number of residents surveyed are on board with a city-run internet service in Quincy.
Christiansen said about 10,000 residents responded to an EntryPoint survey about their internet use, how much they pay and if they d support a citywide network. He said about 80 percent of respondent said they d participate in municipal broadband, and that Quincy residents are, on average, paying about $93 per month for internet roughly $20 more than the nationwide average.
