SEOUL--Air raid sirens sounded on a South Korean island and residents there evacuated to underground shelters after the North fired about a dozen missiles in its direction Wednesday, at least one of them landing near the rivals’ tense sea border. South Korea quickly responded by performing its own missile tests.

The warning shots come amid heightened tensions between the Koreas, due to both the South’s annual military exercises and the increasing pace of the North’s missile tests.

While the North Korean regime has conducted twenty-six missile launches this year, there has not yet been a nuclear test.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch of two long-range strategic cruise missiles, state media reported on Thursday, calling it a test to confirm the reliability and operation of nuclear-capable weapons deployed to military units.

State media says the tests were another successful display of the country’s growing nuclear capability.
