Detroit police are upgrading body cameras and adding more non-lethal weapons to give officers more choice during violent encounters with civilians.

The Detroit Police Department is giving their officers upgraded body cameras and new weapons that are meant to injure and not kill.

The Detroit Police Department on Monday announced that new body cameras and non-lethal weapons would soon be rolling out to officers.

Police officers can call supervisors to deploy the weapons. Detroit police say the weapons are tools to help officers resolve situations without using deadly force.

A historical marker, unveiled during an emotional ceremony in Omaha Friday, tells the story of the lynching of George Smith by a White mob outside the courthouse in 1891.

Detroit police call it a victory. “We got about 39 vehicles out of there,” says Detroit Deputy Chief Eric Ewing.
