The medieval, true-life drama of the Last Duel makes for a surprising but incredibly successful reunion for the writing team of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and also happens to be one of Ridley Scott’s best films in years. Just, whatever you do, don’t be put off by the (intentionally?) drab and unengaging opening chapter. It gets much, much better.

At the age of 83 Ridley Scott still has enough energy and clout to deliver a two-and-a-half hour medieval epic.

The Last Duel is a Rashomon-style epic, telling three different versions, but only one ‘truth’, of a heinous crime and its violent conclusion on the duelling lists. Helen Carr praises the startling and raw performances, but wonders whether more could have been done to bring the voice of the victim to the screen…
