A surprising public showdown made clear that some of Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s colleagues have hit their limit as hundreds of military promotions remain stalled.

The Senate on Thursday approved two senior military nominations, filling crucial positions to lead the Navy and Air Force that have until now been blocked by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.). The Air Force spent more than a month without a confirmed four-star general at the helm.

She was the second woman to be promoted to four-star admiral, and she did multiple deployments, including as commander of a naval destroyer and two stints as aircraft carrier strike group commander.

Thursday's 95-1 vote makes Franchetti the first woman to be a Pentagon service chief and the first female member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Senate voted to confirm top-ranking officers in the Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps on Thursday.

Several other high-level Navy nominations are still awaiting a Senate vote.
