union. the president is having a unifying speech. that is what the white house is saying. at least that is what the script will be in the teleprompter. remember american carnage? we have gone from the president speaking to his base as president of the united states. now he has to give the state of the union. who will he be talking to tonight? it depends on the speech. in terms of immigration, it will be the thing that i m most listening to and that democrats and republicans are listening to. democrats are not pleased with the white house proposal. particularly the changes to family reunification and the visa lottery program. they all made their peace with the wall for letting the d.r.e.a.m.ers stay. the other pillars will be a problem. the other side of the coin, immigration hard liners are upset with the president and the idea he will have a path to
believes someone s right or wrong based on what they want to see. i think this one is pretty easily solvable. the reality is nobody except some of the fringe elements want to deport people who knows nothing except this country as their home. whether it s a wall or whether it s a wall in someplace and technology in other areas, how you could be against border security, i don t know. we just in washington, d.c. just have to learn to get to yes sometimes. and that s to republicans and democrats. we can solve this if we want to. but the president says there s not going to be a deal to let those d.r.e.a.m.ers stay unless there is that money for the wall. he said down the road at some point mexico will pay for it in some form. but he s asking for $18 billion right now to build that long wall along the u.s./mexico
they don t want to be in a position where they said we didn t let d.r.e.a.m.ers stay because we want porous borders. you know this as well as anybody. you can find deals that are just too good for democrats and republicans to pass by. you can cobble together 218 in the house and 50 in the senate or even 60 in the senate on just about any piece of legislation if you re willing to go into it saying i m going to give both sides something they want. there are dozens of issues that fall under this category where 65, 70, 80% of the american people are on the common sense side of the solution and just want there to be an honest debate that s mathematically based when it comes to budget. donald trump watched the health care debacle play out. watched the threats of a government shutdown, the default
i m scared that my life might change. reporter: former president obama who enacted daca said in a statement to target these young people is wrong because they have done nothing wrong and it is cruel. it makes absolutely no sense from an economic standpoint. never mind the fact that this is america, this is a place where we should welcome people like this. reporter: the president s own party is deeply divided. members of his base say daca should end now. but more moderate republicans believe d.r.e.a.m.ers should be protected. the question is, can we come together? the answer is we have no other case. thanks to kristen welker for that report. according to a new political poll voters overwhelmingly support letting d.r.e.a.m.ers stay. 58% think they should be allowed to stay and become citizens if they meet requirements. 18 b 18% say they should stay and not become citizens. and 15% say d.r.e.a.m.ers should be removed or deported.
with chuck schumer and nancy pelosi and the border wall isn t in this one, did he blink in this one? the real answer is yes in that the initial white house position was, with the encouragement of conservatives. they were leading the charge in the house. remember, they said they weren t going to fund the government without the border wall. that ended when the government struck the first deal with leaders. much like the notion of letting these d.r.e.a.m.ers stay in this country he lly, the majority maybe not the majority. many fellow republicans in congress, they don t want to deal with this border wall. they think it s silly. they want border security. even though you have ultra conservatives who are furious at the notion he would do a deal on d.r.e.a.m.ers without the border wall, you have others who are like, phew.
