UN says at least 183 people have been killed in Ethiopia over Amhara region unrest since July

The United Nations human rights office says at least 183 people have been killed in clashes in Ethiopia’s Amhara region since July as Amhara fighters resist efforts by the federal government to disband them.

US says it has suspended all food aid to Ethiopia after investigation finds supplies were diverted

The United States Agency for International Development says it has suspended all food aid to Ethiopia after an internal investigation found supplies intended for needy people were being diverted on a “widespread” scale. USAID did not say Thursday who diverted the food aid. An internal memo prepared by a group of humanitarian donors and seen by the AP pointed to the involvement of Ethiopia’s federal government in the diversion of food aid. The U.S. is the biggest single donor to Ethiopia, providing $1.8 billion in humanitarian assistance, including food aid, in the 2022 fiscal year. About 20 million of Ethiopia's 120 million people rely on aid because of conflict and drought.

US joins UN in suspending food aid to Ethiopia s Tigray

The United States aid agency says it has suspended all food assistance to the northern Ethiopian region of Tigray “until further notice” while it investigates the theft of humanitarian supplies. The U.N. confirmed a similar suspension. USAID Administrator Samantha Power said that her group has “uncovered that food aid, intended for the people of Tigray suffering under famine-like conditions, was being diverted and sold on the local market.” Nearly all of Tigray’s 6 million people rely on food aid, after two years of civil war and government-imposed restrictions on humanitarian relief pushed parts of the region to the brink of famine. The war ended in November with a cease-fire, which also saw aid deliveries resume. It is unclear who was responsible for the theft.
