Grant Wood’s mature career began in 1929, the year of the great stock market crash and the beginning of a decade of national introspection about what constituted the country’s core values and character. The instinct to find reassurance about the future by looking back to a seemingly more innocent past led to a nostalgia for the perceived simplicity and self-sufficiency of rural and small town America.
