Maine has become the newest state to adopt a controversial scheme that would give the presidency to the winner of each election's "National Popular Vote" and would, in effect, permanently cancel any decision that the state's own voters might make.

The notion that relative political power or the dignity of voters depends on whether or not the vote of an individual voter has the exact relation to the number of electors of all other voters shows a lack of serious thinking, or perhaps just a myopic vision of how a great republic might be structured to balance the interests of all its citizens and protect minority rights.
