ALBANY (TNS) — State officials are shutting down the $64 million Excelsior Pass app, a digital artifact of the coronavirus pandemic initially pitched by former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and

Gov. Hochul scrapped the pandemic-era vaccine digital passport after the Empire State spent an eye-raising $64 million on an app that is no longer used by New Yorkers.

Costs for the Excelsior app grew after state officials outsourced much of its development, which they say will allow the platform to serve purposes beyond showing vaccinations.

New York taxpayers are still burning $200,000 a month to maintain the app — the Cuomo-era state vaccine passport that nobody uses and never needed.
