Edwin Poots failed in a bid to secure wider Executive approval for continuing the checks – a move the other Stormont parties dismissed as a stunt.

DUP minister Edwin Poots, whose officials are responsible for carrying out Northern Ireland Protocol checks, has ordered them to stop at midnight.

The move by Edwin Poots could ultimately result in him attempting to unilaterally order a halt to the checks.
