so where does the republican party go from here? joining us now for an exit interview of sorts is fred upton from michigan retiring after 18 terms in congress. thanks for being here. yeah. good to be with you. there are a lot of people out there that don t want you to retire. been hearing from some all around the country. they think it s a bad omen for politics because you re bipartisan and work across the aisle, for the kind of republican you are, kind of like a gerald ford republican. i represent part of his old district. yeah. so do you think your retirement is for boding, for that reason, kind of like are we ending an era where bipartisanship is coming to a close or where your kind of rational republicanism is coming to an end? i sure hope not. we have such a divided government today. senate, house. the only way you ll get things done, not messaging bills.
exit interview, why are they leaving? when we have less police officers, what it boils down to is less working patrol and less detectives working cases, so when you have less police officers working patrol and you still want to deliver the same quality of services, that means they have to work additional hours, and they have to work mandatory overtime. and you don t have the same number of detectives you used to have. that means your case let s go up, so today s young police officer, they value their work-life balance. they value their training, their education. they value their time off with their family, so we are working really hard to be that police department that has a lot to offer its police officers. we are all kind of in the same boat across the country. we are all trying to figure out what that silver bullet is. ainsley: well, when you give them the $15,000 signing bonus, can they leave tomorrow? or do they have to stay? we are a little bit worried
