nathan, as i walk over here, this has been something that i think we ve noticed anecdotally, and you decided to take this dive. i think there s a couple reasons, but one is that the population, at every level, from the population of a district to the voting age of after district, then to the citizen voting age of a district to the actual electorate, at each of those steps, the latino influence is diminishing, and so when you get to the actual election, it decreases the power of the latino vote. we don t have exit polling data, but if we look at it nationwide, if we look at african-american population, it s about 13% in this country. it was about 13% of the electorate in 2012. the hispanic population is about 16% but only 10% of the electorate in 2012 nationwide.
yes, which you knee wasn t nothing but a $50 million float. let s talk about white women. i m going there. chris, you talked about the polarization this past presidential election and there was a lot of talk about the gender divide and a lot of that gender divide said women went overwhelmingly for obama. if you look at regional politics, white women overwhelmingly voted for mitt romney. white women in the south were the ones voting for mitt romney. white women in the northeast were voting for obama. that s actually why so there is absolutely, a racial a nonracialized yesterday logical divide among why this. i think that s we always focus on what s going on idealogically with people of color. what about white people? this is the key thing. when you start slicing and dicing the data and look at exit polling data and we have the categories that are fixed in hour head to look for, african-american and white and
caucus. on the governor s side you have a lot of hispanic and indiana-american governor es showing the way. you make the point that four of the five women serving as governors in 2013 are republicans. you look at large majorities of african-americans. latino and asian americans voting democratic, the question may be how important for the gop s future are women and minority governors to the party, and they clearly have more at this point than actually the democrats do at that level? yeah, it s really remarkable when you look at the the governors and how they have a much more diversity and ethnicity and in gender. and it s a real model when you look at the the exit polling data showing how badly romney underperformed with female voters and how he just did terribly with hispanics and asian-americans. you look at if identity is going to be a big factor in the upcoming election. you can look at susan martinez and bobby jindal.
not 50. i think due to financial reasons. we don t know what happened to the other states it s a tragedy because we mine this data for many deficit reasons and we won t ever have complete exit polling data for the country, 31 states. what is clear from the data we do have, republicans really really lost women and lost them badly. where republicans lost elections it is extraordinary poor performance with women voters. even when they re winning, the weakness with women is a major vulnerability. if they want to fix what went wrong, suspect this a place. president obama didn t win women voters because he is a lady. linda mcmahon is a lady and that did not help her either. this is not a matter of chromosome, a matter of policy. when voters in connecticut rejected linda mcmahon by twice the margin the state rejected her, it is not because she is a woman, because of policy.
we only had exit polling from 31 states, not 50. i think due to financial reasons. we don t know what happened to the other states it s a tragedy because we mine this data for many deficit reasons and we won t ever have complete exit polling data for the country, just 31 states. what is clear from the data we do have, republicans really really lost women and lost them badly. where republicans lost elections it is extraordinary poor performance with women voters. even when they re winning, the weakness with women is a major vulnerability. if they want to fix what went wrong, suspect this a place. president obama didn t win women voters because he is a lady. linda mcmahon is a lady and that did not help her either. this is not a matter of
