states that the republicans have a shot at arizona. kyrsten, cinema is going to be up. you ve got manchin in west virginia. you ve got tammy baldwin and wisconsin, and you ve got debbie stabenow in michigan. so there s a there s a lot of targets on the table for republicans in 2020 four. now, tom , there are some interesting insights abouts the independent exit polling last night.last night. what did you see there?ee well, i mean, it s just that s probably to me, the most s stunning thing about thosetu ext polls is that democrats won independents by two points. if you look back at midterm elections, independents have traditionally sided with the party, the out party, the inuo. the party that s seeking change, not for the status quo. i mean, by 10, 12 , 15 , 20 points. if you look back at 20 , 10 , 20 , fourteen, twenty , eighteen. so thia s is a this is a strang, development from last night. and it looks like republicans turned out, but it looks like t while they they turned out, e
do better. i certainly was on this show. i was very optimistic about a red tide. but the fact is, when you look at the exit polling, 75% of the country says the united states is on the wrong path. now what is biden going to do to work with the congressional republicans house and senate to get america back on the right path or does he ignore that 75% and set up a really consequential 2024 presidential race? the jury is out right now. people are going to watch to see exactly how the city of washington responds to signals sent from america. dana: is there any doubt in your mind that joe biden does run for re-election? no, i think as a historian you have to say you don t know. at his age there could be a health problem. but i think the results of this election make it very unlikely that anyone can force him to not
to become senate majority leader. yesterday when he was asked what he thought about tuesday s results he said, i don t deal in feelings. that s accurate. he does not. he deals in reality. and dealing and just playing the hand he s dealt. but i will tell you, if you look at all of the polling, the cnn exit polling and the mood of the country, the way people feel about the economy. people don t love joe biden either. if we don t find a senate majority here, it s a travesty. all the indicators were there. the whole thing was there to be won and we didn t win it. mcconnell said candidate quality. absolutely. mitch tried to tell them. if you look at some of the races, it was laying there to be won and wasn t. we ll see if the party learns some lessons here, sometimes we do, sometimes we don t. there s also a doctor in the room. they say admission is the
presidential race. then you go to 2022, there have been losses there, too. so i think you re seeing, erica, some, some elements of discontent within the republican party about donald trump. i hesitate to say that s the entire party. i think we have to be careful in making generalizations like that. but there s at least some. yeah. remember on january 7th, 2021, there were a lot of folks pronouncing the end of the trump right reign as it were and things change nd the wake of that. when we look at a potential trump desantis showdown here, first of all, is that realistic? does desantis openly step up to him? what does it look like? i think it s realistic. i think desantis is putting the pieces together to run. i want to cite a couple of things from the exit polling. this gets to the be careful about general sizations about trump. 23% had an unfavorable opinion so he s still popular within the party. let s not say it s all over for
well, it looks like, according to the exit polling, it s because fetterman won. we stood as a citadel of freedom for people across this country. desantis is boring trump. well, i think if they win i should get all the credit, and if they lose, i should not be blamed at all. what an amazing night and what an improbable journey. as much horse manure there is in this room, must be a pony at the bottom of it. we made clear democracy was on the ballot. big picture at a time when so many people are engaged, and this is another referendum on what kind of country we want. vi more later in the program about why i want to share my view with the viewers that a big part of what has been reject second down maga style attacks to our democracy, which itself is a nonpartisan victory. it s a nonpartisan celebration of democracy to say, clear out some of those people. i m curious what else you feel
