trump and some of the republican leaders have been his most vociferous critics. hopefully there will be a little bit of a make-up session there because let s be honest, donald trump is going to need help. he s never done this and i don t think he s quite prepared for the job he s about to get, and you know, it s in everyone s benefit, of course, that he doesn t fail. right. here s why we keep talking about this. because when you take a look at some of the exit polling, when voters were asked about feelings if mr. trump won, 20% said they were concerned and 36%, they were scared. if you look at the exit polling, you will see how divided our nation really is along minority lines, along gender lines, still. david, that s a tall order for mr. trump. it is. it is. i would think that he would go slow about saying exactly what he s going to do.
florida he did it, ohio he did it, iowa they did it. together they were 53 electoral votes. a significant number right there. let s look at also the first time voters. look at these numbers. 56% went for clinton, 40 for trump, two for johnson, one for stein but we should note for the first-time voters, that was about 10% of all of the votes that we got with our nbc exit polling. full 10%. you d think it might have been gre greater given where trump is. also, you look at the millennial vote. see if we can do it this way. this one? there we go? it listened to me. the millennial vote, 55% clinton, 25% tradition. so, again, surprising given
future. we ve got a statement handed to us from the white house. then we ll get to these exit polls which could help explain some of it. the president phoned donald trump to congratulate him on his victory early this morning. he also called secretary clinton and expressed admiration for the strong campaign she waged throughout the country. we ll be reading more of that throughout the morning. nbc news exit polling shows the nation is deeply divided over the direction of the country. 45% of voters nationwide think the next president should either continue obama s policies or move policies in a more liberal direction. 47% want a more conservative direction. 62% of the voters say the nation is currently on the wrong track compared to 52% who said the nation was on the wrong track in 2012 exit polling. right now 69% of voters are dissatisfied or angry at the way the federal government is working and on the president s signature piece of legislation, the affordable care act, 47% of
