The term has been in use for several decades but has gained currency as enterprises have become awash in a sea of data, funneled into databases by a wide variety of new customer-facing applications, particularly mobile apps. Data science, though, can be applied to small data sets as well as the “big data” generated by mass-scale applications.

One of the newest data science programmes in sub-Saharan Africa is the School for Data Science and Computational Thinking at Stellenbosch University (SU) in South Africa, opened in July 2019 with the goal of “blazing new trails in what is still largely uncharted territory,” according to Wim Delva, who was acting director at the school at the time. The programme highlights a multidisciplinary approach embracing subjects including mathematics, computer science, mathematical statistics and AI.

Cloud giant Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a partnership with Explore Data Science Academy to offer an intensive one-year training course.
The course provides a fundamental understanding of software development and cloud computing technologies, giving students a competitive edge, the group said.
Clive Charlton, head of solution architecture for the Sub-Saharan African Public Sector at AWS, said that 95% of students who graduate from the academy, find a job with an average starting income of R360,000 a year.
“The courses are extensive, and we also know that the cost of qualifications and training is often a barrier to young South Africans upskilling themselves.

Explore Data Science Academy has added Data Engineering to its online training offerings.
The 12-month course will provide applicants with the specific skill set required to become data engineers – a key role in the successful digital transformation of a business.
Shaun Dippnall, CEO of Explore, explains: “The use of vast quantities of data by data scientists now requires those with a specialised skill set to organise data and ensure its quality, security and availability to the organisation. These are data engineers.”
According to Dippnall apart from the skill set, there is a shortage of training courses online that offer both the content and practical application of data engineering skills required in the work place. This is particularly true of the South African market.
