View Comments Ford Motor Co. on Monday announced a safety recall for hundreds of thousands of 2016-19 Ford Explorer SUVs over an issue with roof rail covers. The recall applies to 620,483 vehicles in the U.S. and federal territories, 36,419 vehicles in Canada and 4,260 vehicles in Mexico.

Ford recalls 661,000 Ford Explorers for possible loose roof rail covers

According to documents filed by Ford with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue dates back to April 2020, when NHTSA asked Ford about 11 reports it had received from customers who said their roof rail covers had detached while they were driving. After review, Ford determined that the issue “did not present an unreasonable risk” to safety, due to low projected probability of the covers letting go, and that owners would notice if the cover looked loose, or it rattled. Ford extended warranty coverage on the part for a one-time repair within 10 years or 150,000 miles. In its documentation, the automaker said it continued to monitor field data and believed that the warranty program, plus the ability of owners to notice a loose cover, would result in them getting it fixed proactively. But when Ford met with NHTSA in April 2021 for review, the agency requested the recall.
