Russia, China, or America? Who Has the World s Best Tanks?

The United States. And Russia. (Note that such counts include vehicles in storage and reserve. The numbers for tanks in operational units are lower in every case). However, the majority of Beijing’s tanks are old designs, particularly Type 59 and 69 tanks more or less directly copied from the 50s-era Soviet T-54 tank. Such is their profligacy that I once had the pleasure of bumping into one in a children’s playground in Tianjin serving the needs of the (young) people. However, China’s top of the line tank, the Type 99, has commanded healthy respect from international observers, even though it has never been exported, nor used in combat. The reason is simple: the reported performance parameters are equal to many top Western designs, and the Type 99 also packs a few unique tricks of its own.

The FGM-148 Javelin System: America s Secret Weapon?

The FGM-148 Javelin System: America s Secret Weapon? It’s also an expensive piece of kit, with each missile typically costing more than the targets it eliminates.

Armor: Iran Has A Dream

December 16, 2020: In late 2020 Iran announced its army had begun receiving the first of 800 new Karrar tanks. The first Karrar was built in 2017, followed by several more pre-production prototypes. Karrar is another upgraded T-72, something which Iran admits. The 51-ton Karrar has all the features of other late-model T-72 tanks including a three-man crew, autoloaded 125mm gun, modern electronics and composite/ERA armor. Karrar is also the continuation of T-72 upgrades that began in the early 1990s. Back in 1993 Iran produced six prototypes of its new Zulfiqar tank which was described as a hybrid using components or concepts from M48, M60 and T-72 tanks. At the time all three of these tanks were used by the Iranian Army. There were actually two different models of the Zulfiqar. The Zulfiqar 1 appeared in the 1990 and seemed to copy a lot from the 1950s American M48. Mass production of the 40-ton Zulfiqar 1 began in the late 1990s and by 2
