PEN America will honor Jack Petocz, the high school junior who fought against book bans and organized students across Florida to protest HB 1557 (the Parental Rights in Education, or “Don’t Say Gay,” bill) with the PEN/Benenson Freedom of Expression Courage Award at the 2022 PEN America Literary Gala. Devoted to exceptional acts of courage in the exercise of freedom of expression, the award this year is presented to the youth activist whose unflinching stance against censorship and silencing reflects his generation’s refusal of the regressive legislation burdening education throughout the country.
"An ardent champion of LGBTQ rights and freedom of expression, Jack’s advocacy exemplifies how the causes of civil rights and freedom of speech are inextricably intertwined.”
As its title would indicate, Soderbergh’s film, scripted by well-known American short-story writer Deborah Eisenberg, consists primarily of conversations and confrontations (or the avoidance of confrontations) between the various characters.

University will confer 4,438 academic degrees upon 4,093 students at commencement ceremonies
KINGSTON â It will be much smaller compared to past celebrations, but the University of Rhode Island will still be ringing in its 135th Commencement next weekend.Â
Despite all of the challenges that students have faced over this past year, and the sacrifices that had to be made in the best interest of public health, graduates were able to persevere.Â
The university will confer 4,438 academic degrees upon 4,093 students at the commencement ceremonies held the weekend of May 21 through May 23. As always, the number of degrees conferred will be greater than the number of graduates, since so many students earn more than one degree.
