The Bihar Cabinet has approved a proposal to increase the reservation quota for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs), and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) from the current 50% to 75%.

A bill will be brought in the assembly on the same during the ongoing winter session.

Nitish Kumar made a statement to this effect while taking part in a debate that followed the tabling of a detailed report on the caste survey commissioned by his government

The Union Home Minister claimed that the Nitish Kumar government was being unjust to the backward and extremely backward classes.

Addressing a public meeting at Patahi in Muzaffarpur district, Amit Shah also said the decision to conduct the caste survey was taken while the BJP was part of the state government in alliance with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U).

The socioeconomic variation within the Marathas and the community being electorally crucial due to its numbers make the demand difficult to ignore.

The Congress MP added that a similar exercise will be conducted in Chhattisgarh if the party wins Assembly elections there.
