transition. so there are these stories fighting each other out. donald trump came in with this very pure but defensive and angry story. i think you see democrats like beto trying to create a story that's more hopeful and inclusive going to speak about an america that's diversifying in a way that doesn't make people who have been here, people who are afraid of it, that doesn't bring them in as opponents. it manages to bring them in as allies. >> and ezra, you also wrote about a possible anti-democratic outcome when the votes are counted in the house races where the democrats could get more votes than the republicans but fewer seats. and this is something we've seen occur before. it could occur again. and you made a point about how the news media will react to that. that if the democrats, even if they win millions more votes than the republicans and do not get control of the house, the news media will react as if this is trump triumph.
you can imagine a world too where democrats win the house by six votes and majority and win it by 7 points and don't win the majority. it's where those votes are, how the gerrymandering breaks down. there's a lot hot goes into it. but if democrats win that 7% gain but don't win a majority, it will be seen as a huge defeat for the party. where if they win the 6% and do the majority, it'll be seen as a huge win. in terms of what the american people are actually saying it's not true. and it speaks to the problem of trying to understand what is a voice of the american people through elections that have become as distorted and strange as our mid-term and gerrymandered election process has become. >> ezra kline, thank you very much for joining us tonight. really appreciate it. >> thank you. >> coming up, it is kornacki time.
