Special to the Independent Photo by Jim Muchlinski Fabrics Plus owners Tracy Veglahn and Cami Nichols plan to retire in 2021, leaving after 13 years of successful service to sewing customers. MARSHALL A cornerstone of Marshall’s business district will see changes in 2021. The Fabrics Plus store will close its doors after selling off its inventory. Owners Tracy Veglahn and Cami Nichols both want to retire. “There’s no target date for closing,” Veglahn said. “We have a sizable amount of merchandise that we’d like to sell to customers. We’ll keep selling until it’s gone.” Veglahn and Nichols bought Fabrics Plus 13 years ago. The quilt portion of the business was purchased from retiring owner Elaine Nyquist. The sewing machines and fixtures were obtained from Southwest Sewing Center.

Reporter Photos by Deb Gau While the start of the COVID-19 pandemic raised scary questions for her business, Nettie’s owner Jennifer Griebel said she has gotten through the past year with support from customers and assistance like grant funding. Griebel said one of the current challenges she faces is wholesale supply shortages in for decor and gift items. MARSHALL  At this time last year Minnesota was just beginning to fight COVID-19, with measures like a stay-at-home order and closures of a wide variety of businesses. Many people were asking what happened next, including small business owners. “It was really scary, because you just didn’t know what you should do,” said Jennifer Griebel, owner of Nettie’s in Marshall. And even after small stores like Nettie’s were allowed to re-open, she said, “You didn’t know if customers would come back.”
