This past week the state of Nebraska saw an increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations for the first time in 18 weeks, with more patients ending up in the ICU and on ventilators.
On Facebook Live Thursday, the state’s chief medical officer, Dr. Gary Anthone, said this could be for two reasons: people not following directed health measures as strictly and variants of the virus taking hold in Nebraska.
Anthone said some of the variants are more contagious.
“This is why we want to contain these variances, and that’s exactly why we are here today, to let people know that we are not out of the woods. We are very concerned about the increase in hospitalizations, and one of the reasons for that increase could be these variances,” he said.
