Vehicle registrations in India reached 2,127,653 units last month, marking a significant increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA). Two-wheeler sales grew by 15%, driven by the rural market, while passenger vehicle sales reached an all-time high. However, high inventory levels and potential caution from consumers due to upcoming elections could pose challenges for auto dealers.

Vehicle registrations in India reached 2,127,653 units last month, marking a significant increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA). Two-wheeler sales grew by 15%, driven by the rural market, while passenger vehicle sales reached an all-time high. However, high inventory levels and potential caution from consumers due to upcoming elections could pose challenges for auto dealers.

As many as 28,93,107 two-wheeler vehicles were sold in the festive period, as opposed to 23,96,665 in the same 42-day period the previous year, stated FADA.

In October, year-on-year auto sales in India declined by 8% due to the Shraddh period in the first half of the month. However, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) pointed out that this decline should not be a cause for concern, as sales increased by 13% from the previous month. Three-wheeler sales also reached a new high.

Total Vehicle Retail Sales: The narrative of H1 FY24 is one of resilience and recovery, with the total auto retail registering a 9% growth YoY, FADA said.

Indias overall auto sales in September increased by 20% compared to the previous year. The two-wheeler and three-wheeler categories also saw new records. The 2W category had a 22% increase, while the 3W category had a 49% increase. However, tractor sales decreased by 10%. India Auto Sales: "Septembers Auto Retail celebrated a 20% YoY leap, continuing the momentum from the previous month while marking a 3.5% MoM increase, seamlessly transitioning into the festive periods sweet spot set to unfold over the next 42 days," said FADA President Manish Raj Singhania.

Auto sales in September: The federation stated that it has shifted its stance from ‘cautiously optimistic’ to ‘optimistic’ and is anticipating a vibrant festive season for auto sales due to the approaching 42-days festive period.    

With all the categories in green, FADA stated that the 2022 festive season turned out to be the best in the last four years, stated FADA.
