Stafford aims to use leftover CARES funds to enlarge courthouse
Stafford County will soon schedule a public hearing regarding the use of federal CARES Act funds that would be used to expand the county’s iconic courthouse.
The Stafford County Board of Supervisors were recently given an update on a project intended to expand the courthouse, which has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, the pandemic seems to have offered a silver lining for this project to allow the county to use CARES funding to potentially get the project completed within a 26-month time frame.
During the pandemic, it was impossible for the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and Clerk of Court offices to comply with social distancing rules, said Deputy County Supervisor Mike Smith, because the offices were too small.
Stafford residents plagued by late U.S. Mail deliveries
Stafford County has been experiencing delays from the U.S. Postal Service with residents receiving their mail weeks late.
The Postal Service has stated that these delays were a result of the combination of the increased online orders from people staying at home and a decrease in staff because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Stafford Board of Supervisors addressed these delays at their meeting on Feb. 2 and continued discussion at their meeting on Feb. 16.
At the Feb. 2 meeting, Hartwood District Supervisor Gary Snellings said that the delays had become a serious issue in the western part of the district.
