Chess Expert Zooms In To Share Knowledge With Falmouth Players

For the past twenty years, chess instructor Glenn Davison has found great enjoyment in sharing his knowledge of chess with others. Although he does not live in Falmouth, he recently shared his passion for the game with Upper Cape residents via his online chess courses at the Falmouth Public and West Falmouth libraries. When asked where his passion for chess began, Mr. Davison recalled fond memories of time spent with his father. “My father, who was also a chess teacher, taught me how to play at the age of six”, he said. While a career with large corporations doing remote and in-person training kept him busy for many years, he wanted to dedicate some of his retirement doing the thing he’s loved for most of his life. To Mr. Davison, chess is not a profession but a life’s passion, brought on by his father. Continuing in his footsteps, Mr. Davison now shares his love of chess with the world.

Arthur P Vidal Jr

Arthur P. Vidal Jr. of East Falmouth, who was the president and owner of V & V Construction Co. for many years, died March 4. He was 85. He was the husband of Nancy C. (Pirie) Vidal. They were married at St. Anthony’s Church on September 7, 1957. Born in Wareham, he was the son of Arthur P. Vidal and Deolinda (Gonsalves) Vidal. He was a member of the Lawrence High School Class of 1954, where he played varsity football for three years, was president of student council and selected for the Smythe honor roll. Mr. Vidal graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in civil engineering in 1959. During an interview with the Enterprise in 1966, Mr. Vidal said that he thought an engineering degree would be an asset to a construction business. His father, a Falmouth native, had worked in construction since 1945. He was a building contractor and real estate developer in town so his children were raised in the industry.

Libraries Scheduled To Reopen On March 22

Library Fund, Established In 1890s, Grows To $681,922

A fund is available to the Falmouth Public Library board of trustees over and above the library’s annual operational budget. Established in the 1890s by James M. Beebe, the trustees fund was formalized by Town Meeting vote in 1902. The fund has grown from $337 in 1897 to $23,000 in 1986 to nearly $681,922 today. “Over the last 30-plus years, we’ve gotten some bigger chunks donated to the library, which have been earmarked for library enhancement,” trustee chairwoman Judith Fenwick said. This includes a $274,990 bequeathment from the William Gallagher Trust in 2011, library Director Linda E. Collins said. “These donations to the library go to, and are managed by, the library trustees,” Ms. Collins said.
