A life of contradictions: Shedding light on Dark Star Once he was plain old George, and then, foibles and all, he turned himself into one of the Twin Cities most flamboyant sports media personalities. When he collapsed in his apartment on June 1, dead at the age of 66, his friends and many of his listeners from his old WCCO-AM radio sports show were still trying to figure him out.
He had three names Dark Star, George Chapple and George Baird a seemingly endless supply of money and possibly two ex-wives, though some thought there were three. He drove a Maserati, took the name Dark Star from the 1953 Kentucky Derby winner and once falsified a subpoena to scare a man into apologizing when he felt he had been insulted.
we begin tonight with an emotional night in the district as thousands of the nation s police officers come to the district to honor those killed in the line of duty. the fallen officers were remembered at the national fallen officers law enforcement memorial in d.c. john gonzalez has more on those who came to remember their loved ones. leon, this is an extremely poignant event at the police memorial in downtown d.c., many families saying it is bittersweet to be here. this year, 152 names were added to the wall. sadly, that is a 25% increase from last year. it behind at the hundreds of names read aloud and engraved on the memorial, there are thousands of heartfelt memories, many years of devoted service that of britain came to an end for tragic reasons. it is very emotional. luckily, we lost six law enforcement officers. this woman gave birth to triplets daughters just months after her husband was killed and a car accident last april. she is overwhelmed with emotions.
