Learn about the history of the Black Cultural Center at the University of Oregon In 2015, the Black Student Task Force on the University of Oregon campus gave the administration a list of 12 demands. The group wanted changes that would better reflect an environment that was safe and accepting of Black students, and that worked toward the UO’s stated mission of promoting equity, diversity and inclusion. Some of those demands were never met. But one that was met four years later brings a significant change to campus. In 2019, history was made at the UO when the long-awaited Lyllye Reynolds-Parker Black Cultural Center opened to cheers of the students who had long fought for it.

But in the small town of Miami, Arizona, comments at a recent City Council meeting surrounding a proclamation for similar recognition have generated controversy. The Feb. 8 meeting started off routinely, with the Pledge of Allegiance and the reading of the agenda. But shortly after it began, Councilman Don Reiman expressed displeasure at proclaiming February Black History Month. “There’s a big to-do about the Black community wanting to revise history and tear down all the monuments and not deal with the history, and we’re supposed to set forth Black History Month,” said Reiman. “It kind of seems like there’s kind of a contradiction in those two philosophies.â€
