President Biden said on Dec. 9 that our democracy ”can at times be fragile, but it also inherently resilient.” Not everyone, however, is so optimistic as the president. The events of Jan. 6 and their aftermath have sparked concern that our “fragile democracy” is in grave danger.

This reader and others requested a pro-tax effort. We’re especially grateful to Professor Mary Ellen O’Connell, a member of the Notre Dame Law School faculty, who reminded us of a famous quote from Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes: “ I like to pay taxes. With them I buy civilization.” Another jurist, Federal Judge Learned Hand wrote, “… nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands: taxes are enforced extractions, not voluntary contributions.”
