Tonight, a chance to sample missing sense of community | News, Sports, Jobs

May 7, 2021 “That sense of community again” — that’s what Shanin Dougherty, co-chair of the First Friday Committee, hopes to find tonight when the widely popular Lycoming Arts First Friday event returns after a long pandemic-prompted hiatus. Yes, Shanin, that’s something we long for too. As a community newspaper, watching folks go into a prolonged period of isolation — participating in it ourselves — has been hard. So hard, in fact, that many would call it the biggest challenge of...

Angus Cow-Calf Operation Boosts Productivity

Eliza Walton was looking for the right farm for her four Angus cows. She found it, and much more, at Egg Hill Farm, where Chris Ishler was growing row crops. Ten years later, the crop fields are pastures, and Walton and Ishler are managing a herd of 40 registered Angus. “We joke, it was a match made in farmer heaven,” Walton said. At first, the couple just sold calves from the cow-calf herd, but before long they were looking to improve productivity and expand the markets for their bus...

Mason City's Gatehouse deal: Lucrative, risky, necessary?

Its a question of balance. Every time a city considers providing incentives to lure a developer, its leaders must weigh the project’s potential to generate revenue against the cost to taxpayers. In the case of Mason City’s proposed public/private $24 million development agreement with Gatehouse Capital, City Administrator Aaron Burnett is adamant that without the agreement written just the way it is, there would be no deal with Gatehouse. Burnett appears to be in the minority. Several...

These South Jersey restaurants are thriving despite COVID-19 pandemic

The Westmont Diner has survived – even thrived – during the global pandemic for a myriad of reasons. It’s a place people have loved for many years that offers quality food and service. The owners know they must continue to offer what people have come to expect from the Haddon Avenue family restaurant. At the same time, surviving a year-long pandemic and ever-changing COVID-19 restrictions has meant they, like other restaurants who have kept their doors open, also needed to be creative...

Explore nearby remnants of Ohio-Erie Canal

Beverly Kerr Columnist George Washington and Thomas Jefferson discussed the idea of a canal from Lake Erie to the Ohio River back in 1784. It wasnt until July 4, 1825, that ground was broken for the Ohio-Erie Canal in Newark to move goods more efficiently across Ohio. Amazing as it seems these canals were hand-dug with shovels and wheelbarrows and sometimes mules pulling drag lines. The canal was about 40 feet wide at water level and 26 feet wide at the bottom, with a depth of about 4 foot. F...
