While most high school athletes are taking a break during this week’s MSHSAA-mandated “dead week” period, the Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors are enjoying an extended summer season. Despite second-place finishes in both the Zone 1 Tournament and the Missouri AAA State Tournament, the Post 5 Seniors will be playing this week in the Mid-South Regional Tournament at Bobby Hayes Stadium in Pelham, Ala.

It took 19 innings Thursday to decide the champion of the Missouri American Legion AAA State Tournament at Liberty Park. The first 12 innings were an instant thriller that went in favor of the Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors, forcing an “if necessary” game. During the final seven innings, St. Joseph Post 11 needed just one big inning to capture the state title.

With their season on the line, the Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors had to beat the previous two Missouri state championship programs Wednesday. And they did. Facing elimination, the Post 5 Seniors won back-to-back one-run games, edging Festus Post 253 for a 5-4 victory and knocking off Zone 1 champion Washington Post 218 for a 1-0 win in the Missouri American Legion AAA State Tournament at Liberty Park.

And then there were four. The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors are one of the four teams playing this week in the Missouri American Legion AAA State Tournament at Liberty Park in Sedalia. The Post 5 Seniors open the state tournament today against St. Joseph Post 11, with first pitch for the first-round game scheduled for 5 p.m.
