WWII veteran Samuel Meyer, who still puts in a few days a week at Meyer the Hatter, the business started by his grandfather in 1894, was awarded the rank of chevalier, or knight, of the National Order of the Legion of Honor. The French government honored Meyer during a ceremony Tuesday in New Orleans.

Many of the Tuskegee people interviewed talked about obstacles they or their loved ones had experienced in trying to vote, often violent obstacles.

Meyer is honored with the award for his work as an aircraft armorer, responsible for loading P-38 fighter planes with bullets, and bombs, helping liberate France.

In 1940, Benjamin O. Davis Sr. became the first Black person to achieve the rank of brigadier general in the US Army. His son, Benjamin O. Davis Jr., later commanded the famed Tuskegee Airmen. In 1960, Davis Jr. became the first Black brigadier general in the Air Force.
