The Air Force is considering a plan to permanently replace its aging fleet of F-15 Eagle fighters on Okinawa with a smaller number of more advanced aircraft, a Japanese news magazine reported recently.

They worry that if A-10s at Guard bases in Maryland and Michigan retire without a replacement, those squadrons could lose their fighter missions.

A contingent of F-15C Eagles from the Air National Guard in two states arrived at Kadena Air Base on Okinawa recently to guarantee fighter coverage as the Defense Department retires the base’s aging fleet.

While the operations will go on for two weeks, the noise should taper off near 9:30 p.m. on each day.
