In its latest monthly global grain report, the USDA said the Philippines is expected to import a total of 2.1 million metric tons (MT) of rice in 2022. This is higher than this year’s import forecast of two million MT. “With a smaller crop, the country is forecast to import more to satisfy rising demand,” the USDA said.

In its latest report titled “Asia’s emerging economies better cushioned against Taper Tantrum than in 2013,” S&P chief economist for Asia Pacific Shaun Roache said the Philippines and India are the most vulnerable due to accelerating inflation. “Both economies have seen inflation rise in recent months. Real policy rates are below long-run average levels, eroding the return buffers,” the debt watcher said.

In its latest report “Women, Business and the Law 2021,” the World Bank said the Philippines scored 78.8 out of 100 on the WBL 2021 index, which  analyzes laws and regulations affecting women’s economic opportunity in 190 economies across eight indicators – mobility, workplace, pay, marriage, parenthood, entrepreneurship, assets and pension.

Among those who arrived aboard the government-chartered Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight were three abandoned minors, several detainees who had been imprisoned in Dubai and wards and their minor children from the shelters of the Philippine embassy in Abu Dhabi and consulate general in Dubai. It was the 60th chartered flight arranged by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), as part of the administration’s “Kalinga at Malasakit for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs),” since the pandemic broke out.
