McCafferty said festival organisers work to vet performers and schedule times for the performances at each locale. He said Paul Lee, of Christchurch band The Secret Lives of Ukulele, even followed his workshop with a flashmob which “traipsed through town, and ended up serenading the supermarket”. A busy programme offered 20 different workshops for all levels of expertise, including basic techniques of using a loop pedal, strumming styles, and even one exploring the “bass genius” of Rutger Gunnarsson, who performed on many of Swedish supergroup ABBA’s hits. McCafferty said the most repeated piece of feedback had been attendees telling him, and fellow organiser Fi McCafferty, that this year has been “the best Ukefest ever”.
