Apple extends Find My support to third-party vendors including Belkin, Dutch bike maker VanMoof, and Chipolo

Expensive bike, earpods can now be tracked from inside the walled garden Matthew Hughes Thu 8 Apr 2021 // 12:31 UTC Share Copy An upgrade to Apple s Find My app has added support for devices from third-party manufacturers including gadget-tracking startup Chipolo, Belkin, and niche Dutch bike maker VanMoof. Find My is a service that allows iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AirPod owners to locate their missing devices through a dedicated application or website. Until now, Apple had refused to support third-party vendors, forcing careless punters to rely on other services, such as Tile or (ironically) Chipolo. That s changed with the launch of the Find My Network Accessory Program, which will allow independent firms to piggyback off Apple s tech, provided they meet Cupertino s stringent privacy and security rules.

Apple expands Find My tracking network to third-party accessories

First devices from Belkin, Chipolo, and VanMoof arrive next week on April 7, 2021, 16:24 In brief: On Wednesday, Apple updated its Find My app to include support for third-party devices. Formerly known as Find My iPhone, the app can locate virtually any Apple product you own through a network of WiFi, cellular, and Bluetooth-connected devices. Apple s new Find My Network Accessory Program expands its tracking network to include products from participating manufacturers. Tracking a non-Apple device works the same way as first-party products. Each item will show up on the Find My map represented by an icon. Tapping an icon s device brings up an interface that allows the user a couple of options. If the device is nearby, the app can signal it to play a sound, making it easier to find. If the device is lost or stolen, there is an option to lock it. Once locked, it cannot be paired to another account.
