Four avalanches in the north of Norway have claimed four lives.

The Norwegian authorities described the situation as extremely serious and advised people to avoid travelling in the affected areas, Xinhua news agency reported, citing reports by the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.

"There were five people of foreign origin that were on an outing in the area. We can confirm that one person is deceased," Morten Pettersen, a spokesman for the police, told journalists.

At least three people, including a foreign tourist, have died in several avalanches in northern Norway, Norwegian broadcaster NRK reports, citing police.

Four people, including foreign tourists, were killed Friday as multiple avalanches hit Norways far north, including one which swept a house and a barn into the sea, police said.

In the deadliest incident, a house and barn were swept into the sea on the island of Reinøya.
