Russian forces have tortured, unlawfully detained, and forcibly disappeared civilians in the occupied areas of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, and have also tortured prisoners of war (POWs) held there.

The treatment of prisoners of war (POW) in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is a growing issue. Both sides have been accused of violations of the Geneva Conventions that protect combatants when they are no longer able to fight. The recent trial and death sentence in Eastern Ukraine against three foreign combatants captured by the Russian army is the latest controversy. It’s a violation in itself, says British Law professor Lawrence Hill-Cawthorne.

The status of "prisoner of war" (POW) is legally protected, with a specific definition and rights that attach to it under international law.

Russian forces killed and wounded numerous civilians in eight attacks in Chernihiv city in northeastern Ukraine in early March 2022.
