bills this week. we ll talk about it with the acting director of the u.s. immigration and customs enforcement agency tom hannon and our specialist and analysts are also standing by. first let s go to cnn white house correspondent kaitlin collins. the president is ramping up his rhetoric despite the bipartisan backlash to his family separation policy. reporter: he is, wolf. and he s scheduled to go to capitol hill any minute now. reporters are gathering here outside of the white house for that departure. and that was essentially supposed to be a meeting along the lines of money immigration p of an immigration talk but this is growing louder and louder by the minute to where the president simply can t ignore them any more. now so far the president has been resist about to the critics of the policy who say he should end it but how long will that last and will the president let up?
we re following as well. cnn is learning that president trump s long time personal lawyer michael cohen plans to hire an experienced criminal trial attorney in new york. let s go to our political reporter m.j. lee working the story. who is the lawyer that michael cohen plans to hire? reporter: well, wolf, what we ve learned moments ago is that michael cohen plans to hire a new lawyer, his name is guy petrillo. he s an experienced trial lawyer as he said. he was the former head of the criminal division of the u.s. attorney s office in manhattan and the paperwork in the retainer may not have been fully finalized just yet. but again we expect that michael cohen will begin working with this new lawyer, guy petrillo. what does this mean? it is clearly a shift in legal strategy to say the least, at a moment when we know that cohen is obviously feeling a lot of heat. he is under criminal investigation in new york. the fbi raided his home, his hotel room and his office earlier this year.
as you know, what he s thinking through is what is the best thing to do for him and his family and one thing we ve been reporting on is the fact that cohen would like a lawyer who is very familiar with the southern district of new york, this is where the criminal investigation is its taking place and i should note and this is an important reminder, he has not yet been charged with any wrongdoing. but his attorneys have been going through some millions of files and hundreds of encrypted messages collected as a part of the raid. so it is potentially significant that he has decided to team up with this new lawyer. m.j., also getting new information on whether cohen will stay loyal to president trump. reporter: that is right. we are told that cohen has signaled to friends that he is willing to give investigators information on the president if that is what they are looking for. here is what a frie friend of told cnn. he knows a lot of things about the president and he s not adverse
